Former FC Richmond Magic player and coach, Ian Stowe, was recently diagnosed with a form of cancer called Germinoma. The tumor was found on Ian's brain stem near the medulla.

Friends and Teammates of Ian from his playing days at William and Mary have put together a website to follow Ian's battle, as well as donate to the Stowe Family, and announce future fundraisers to help raise money to help the family with ever-increasing bills associated with the disease.

FC Richmond Mystx '97 -- Champions in Phoenix

Congratulations to the FC Richmond Mystx '97 and Magic '97 on a great trip to Phoenix, AZ and the SC Del Sol Desert Classic. The Mystx '97 (U14 Girls) finished the trip as champions in the U14 Division. The Magic '97 (U14 Boys) also had an impressive run in the tournament, but fell short 1-0 in the finals.

The annual trip for the U14 Magic and Mystx teams, is a player only trip and a wonderful experience for both team. The Desert Classic regular features teams from Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and occasionally California. The FC Richmond teams always represent themselves well, even though they play against teams that are usually in midseason form. This year's trip offered the teams a unique opportunity to watch DC United (see below) during a training session and meet some of the players afterward; and of coure both teams were able to explore some unbelievable scenery around the Arizona landscape (see below) The trip, which is player only and takes the teams away from their parents, cell phones, computers, etc...is a great way for the teams to learn more about each other and mature as a players, both on and off the field.

The Phoenix Trip is one of several player only trips that FC Richmond annually takes...other trips include a Thanksgiving trip to Florida during the Thanksgiving holiday for the U12 Boys and a Columbus Day Tournament trip to Florida for the U16 Girls. All trips are professionally run by the FC Richmond Directors and Coaching staff and are great experiences for everyone involved.

Congratulations to the Magic and Mystx U14 teams on a wonderful trip and great work on the field.

Two Magic Players Sign National Letters of Intent

Congratulations to FC Richmond Magic ’93 players, Wes Saupe and Luis Rendon, who signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, February 1st.

Both players, who are standouts at Cosby High School, will continue their soccer careers in the ACC...Saupe signing with Virginia Tech and Rendon signing with Duke University.

Congratulations to both players.

FC Richmond’s spring recreation registration is now avaiable. If you haven’t already done so, make sure you sign up for our brand new winter indoor season. After that season is complete, we will be gearing up for our Spring Season (though the weather right now feels like the spring season should start today). FC Richmond Players Selected to VCCL Select Teams

Congratulations to the following players on their selection to the VCCL Select Teams...

VCCL Girls Select Team -- Elie Caples (FC Richmond Mystx '97)

VCCL Boys Select Team -- AJ Rogers and Howard Charles (FC Richmond Magic '97)

All three players were selected to the respective teams through a nomination and tryout process. The teams will both compete in tournaments in Dallas, TX during the first week in April. The Girls Select Team will compete in the Dallas International Girls Cup, while the Boys Select Team will compete in the prestigious Dallas Cup. The two select teams are comprised of players from both the VCCL South and newly formed, VCCL North.

Elkin Sports Performance Becomes Official Strength and Conditioning Program of FC Richmond

ELKIN SPORTS PERFORMANCE BECOMES OFFICIAL STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING PROGRAM OF FC RICHMOND

FC Richmond is pleased to announce a new partnership with Elkin Sports Performance (ESP), making ESP the Official Strength and Conditioning program of FC Richmond. “FC Richmond has been working with ESP for several years now and we are excited to officially partner with ESP to enhance and expand the benefit of their programs to our players”, commented Assistant Director of Coaching, Trip Ellis. The enhanced partnership means a continuation of the relationship between ESP and FC Richmond, which has been in effect for the last three years. ESP has supplied preseason conditioning practices to the U15-U19 Magic/Mystx teams over the last three summers, as well as offering discounted services to all Magic/Mystx/Metro players during the off-season. Under the new partnership, ESP will work directly with the U11-U14 Mystx teams during the fall and U11-U14 Magic teams during the spring to enhance the strength and conditioning of the players in these pivotal age groups. Luis Rendon -- Gatorade National Player of the Year

Luis Rendon -- Named National Gatorade Boy’s Soccer Player of the Year!!!

Today, while sitting in his art class at Cosby High School, Luis Rendon (FC Richmond Magic ’93) had no idea what was about to hit him. In the hallway was former MLS standout, Alecko Eskandarian, ready to come in to the class and let Luis know that he was named Gatorade National Boy’s Soccer Player of the Year. Luis, a current junior at Cosby, and member of the Magic ’93 team, is the first Virginia soccer player to win the National Award and the first Junior to win the National Award. Luis has spent the rest of the day enjoying the recognition with his teammates, coaches, and members of the Gatorade and ESPN Rise family. Luis, who will attend the ESPY Awards later this year, is now up for Gatorade Male Athlete of the Year. Luis, cannot celebrate too long, as he heads to Portugal with the US Under-18 National Team on May 19th. Congratulations to Luis on being named Gatorade Boy’s Soccer National Player of the Year.

Director of Tournaments Opening

Director of Tournaments

FC Richmond is seeking a Director of Tournaments to oversee and manage all aspects of FC Richmond’s two annual tournaments…Sun Cup (recreational tournament over the 1^st weekend in June) and the Richmond Cup (travel tournament over Labor Day weekend). The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of running a successful youth athletic tournament, as well as a having an understanding of the rules and regulations in the game of soccer. The candidate’s duties will include hiring tournament staff, whether professional or volunteer; implementing the policies and rules of the tournament; interacting with the persons overseeing the facilities; instructing the staff and coordinating internal communication; the recruitment and retention of teams, coordinating event finances; and overseeing scheduling, statistics, communication, promotion, marketing, and participant recognition for both annual tournaments.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

FC RICHMOND TRYOUTS 2011-12 ANNOUNCED!!!!!!

Thank you for your interest in FC Richmond Soccer Programs. Tryouts for 2010-2011 FC Richmond Travel Soccer and Player Development Programs (PDP) will be held May 2-May 23. Tryouts for all age groups and programs will be held at Huguenot Park Soccer Fields and typically last 1 - 1.5 hours depending upon the number of players registered for a particular age group. Please scroll down to determine your tryout date.

Players are asked to register online in advance to minimize lines at the registration tables on tryout dates. Please enter all information accurately and completely. Please pay particular attention to entering the player's LEGAL first and last name and an accurate birthdate. Online registration will close at midnight before each scheduled tryout day. Those players registering the day of the tryout, without access to a computer or unable to register online should arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to the tryout session with a parent to complete necessary paperwork.

All players should wear proper soccer attire including shinguards. Players are asked to bring an age-appropriate soccer ball and plenty of water. Parents/players are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to the beginning of a tryout session to check the player in at the registration table, receive a tryout number and get directions to the correct field.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (PDP)
For those players who demonstrate the ability and desire to further develop their soccer skills, FC Richmond offers the Player Development Program (PDP). Selected players ages U8-U9 are invited to participate in this program which, under the guidance of professional trainers, introduces the basic technical skills and training habits required for playing competitive soccer. While there is increased competition, our emphasis is on developing complete and confident players who are not afraid to take risks.

U8 and U9 PDP players compete in-house with other FC Richmond U8-U9 PDP Teams.

The format of PDP encourages players to master ball-handling techniques and individual player creativity in a fun, yet educational, environment.

TRAVEL SOCCER PROGRAMS
MAGIC (boys) MYSTX (girls) Metro (boys and girls)
For those U10-U19 players who have demonstrated the ability and determination necessary to take their game to the highest competitive level, FC Richmond offers a highly selective travel soccer program.

Boys and girls selected for this program will continue to develop their individual technical skills and game strategies within a team environment and will master the skills and training habits necessary to succeed at a highly competitive level. Teams are formed from the most talented, dedicated and competitive players in the Richmond area and beyond.

U11 – U18/19 Magic and Mystx teams compete in the prestigious Virginia Club Champions League (VCCL) against other elite teams from around the state.

U10 Magic and Mystx teams compete in the Advanced Development Soccer League (ADSL) and follow the same tournament schedule as older Magic and Mystx teams.

For those players that are not selected a Magic or Mystx team, FC Richmond offers Metro Boys and Girls teams. Selected players boys ages U10-U14 and girls ages U10-U13 are invited to participate in this program which, under the guidance of professional trainers, introduces the basic technical skills and training habits required for playing competitive soccer. While there is increased competition, our emphasis is on developing complete and confident players who are not afraid to take risks.

Dave Amsler, Director of Coaching, a professional soccer teacher with more than 35 years of experience, directs FC Richmond's Travel Soccer Program. He holds a USSF "A" license, US soccer's highest license. He is the founder of both the Richmond Strikers and FC Richmond soccer clubs. Dave actively coaches one or two select teams per year, in addition to overseeing all travel soccer teams and coaches.

Trip Ellis holds a "A" license, is a former stand-out college and professional player and serves as FC Richmond's Assistant Director of Coaching and is an active coach in the travel soccer program. Trip oversees the U8-U9 PDP Program and all Metro teams (boys and girls)

John Le Lay 1944-2010

FC Richmond would like to thank everyone for their warm thoughts and notes concerning the passing of John Le Lay. John was an amazing person and huge part of the FC Richmond family. As a club, we have discussed several possible ways to honor John’s legacy through FC Richmond. We have decided on two ideas that we plan to set up to make sure John is remembered for many years to come.

1) John Le Lay Memorial Fund – The John Le Lay Memorial Fund will be set up to honor the life and legacy of John Le Lay. Each year, the FC Richmond Board of Directors, along with the Le Lay family, will make a decision on how to use the money raised though the fund to best represent John. There are many things that John was passionate about and the goal of this fund will be to ensure those projects are supported.

If you would like to donate to the John Le Lay Memorial Fund, you may do so in the following ways….

2) John Le Lay PDP World Cup – John started the “World Cup” for the U8 & U9 PDP program several years ago. It was truly one of his favorite events on the soccer calendar. Beginning with the Spring 2011 PDP World Cup, we will rename the event the John Le Lay World Cup. Details of the specifics to this event and how we will honor John through the day’s festivities will be given out as we get closer to the spring.

Thank you again to everyone who sent in notes and well wishes. It showed how much John meant to so many people throughout the FC Richmond family. We are confident that the John Le Lay Memorial Fund and the John Le Lay PDP World Cup will keep the memory of John Le Lay alive in our program for many years to come.

It comes with a heavy heart and great sadness to announce the passing of John Le Lay after a long battle with cancer.

John has been a member of the FC Richmond family for twenty-five years and contributed to the lives of so many youth soccer players in the Richmond area. John’s love and passion for the game of soccer will surely be missed. It is that same love and passion that will live on in the players that had the pleasure of being coached by John. During his time with FC Richmond, John served as a Magic coach, Mystx coach, Metro coach, and most recently the U8 PDP Coach. John was a beloved man throughout the FC Richmond community. Every player that was coached by Coach Le Lay, immediately became a better player and a better person.

John lended his voice to the recent FC Richmond radio ad...just one of the many contributions John made to the club over the last 25 years.
