FC Richmond's 25th Anniversary Team

FC Richmond is proud to celebrate 25 years of soccer in the Richmond community by presenting the FC Richmond 25th Anniversary Team.

Congratulations to the following members of the FC Richmond family that been named to the 25th Anniversary Team!

 

Trip Dunville – 1968   Trip was one of the original members of the FC Richmond program. During his time with the club, Trip was a member of the ODP State team several years, the ODP Region I several times, and a member of the NSCAA All-Area team in 1985 and 1986. In 1985 he was also selected as a member of the NSCAA High School All-American team and also won the Henrico County School Board Recognition of Excellence and Achievement. After leaving the Richmond area, Dunville headed to Davis and Elkins College to play for the Nationally Ranked soccer program. After college, Dunville headed down to Caribbean to pursue various interests, including running a soccer club called St. Thomas Youth Soccer Association. While in the Caribbean, Trip became a member of the US Virgin Islands National Team and competed with the national team in their 2006 World Cup Qualifying campaign. Dunville is now back in Richmond living with his wife. Trip, a USSF “B” Licensed coach, will be rejoining FC Richmond this spring as a coach with the PDP and the Magic/Mystx program.

 

Shane Amsler – 1968 - Shane is another member of the 25th Anniversary Team that was with the club since its beginning. Shane also spent time in Derby County, England at the age of 12, where he was a member of the local school boys’ team. Shane returned to FC Richmond and continued to excel with the club, being named to the ODP Region 1 team twice. At 15, Shane set the FC Richmond record of juggling with 16,584 juggles…a record that still stands within the club. As a member of the Douglas Freeman High School Team, Amsler was selected as a High School All-American and was named the 1986 Gatorade Player of the Year for Virginia. Amsler headed to Ulster Community College where he helped lead the school to a 4th Place finish in the National Community College Championship. He later transferred to Tampa University where he won a Division II National Championship in 1994. Amsler, a USSF “B” Licensed Coach, returned to Richmond to help coach with the Magic and Mystx programs. He then headed to Alabama and coached the Vestavia Steamers U18 team to a 3rd Place finish in the US Youth Soccer National Championships. Amsler now resides in Rome, Georgia working as a Fitness Instructor with the Rome YMCA.

 

Corey Turnage – 1969 - Corey came to FC Richmond when the club began back in 1985. After a standout club and high school career, which included eclipsing the 100 career goals mark for Steward School, Turnage headed to the University of Connecticut. After four very successful years at UCONN, Corey continued playing the game he loved in the A-League (USL). He spent two years down in Charleston, SC with the Charleston Battery. After leaving the Battery, Corey headed back home to Richmond to join the Richmond Kickers. Turnage was on one of the more successful Kickers Pro Teams, helping guide the group to a USISL Championship and US Open Cup Title. Turnage concluded his professional career in 1996, after five great years. Corey remains in Richmond, living with his wife and newborn son, and working as an Architecture/Design Representative with Ceramic Technics Ltd.

 

Rob Ukrop – 1970 - Rob was a member of the FC Richmond Magic program under the tutelage of Alan Schrader and Dave Amsler. After a successful high school and club career, Rob moved onto Davidson College, where he was a two-time All-American selection. As a senior, Rob served as a tri-captain for the 1992 Davidson Wildcat team that made a run to the NCAA Division 1 Final Four. Rob was honored as the 1992 Adi Dasler Player of the Year and a finalist for the Hermann Award. Rob enjoyed a twelve-year career as a professional player who competed for teams in the NPSL, APSL, MLS, and the USL.  Rob’s other professional highlights include scoring the first two goals in New England Revolution franchise history in 1996 and competing in England with the USL All-star squad in 2002. Since retiring in 2004, Rob has remained active in the game earning a USSF “A” coaching license and NSCAA Premier Diploma. He serves as a coach with the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club and also serves on their Board of Directors.

 

Phillip Shearer – 1970 - Phillip was one of the original members of the FC Richmond Soccer club, coming over to FC Richmond when Dave Amsler started the club in 1985. Phillip was a multiple selection to the VYSA ODP State Team and a selection to the Virginia High School All-State team while at Monacan High School. Phillips headed to the United States Military Academy in West Point to continue his soccer career. While at West Point, Shearer was a three year starter and a captain during his senior year. Also during his senior year, he was honored as Patriot League Tournament MVP, All Patriot League First Team, and a NSCAA All-New York Region Selection. Phillip graduated from West Point and then served 5 years in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Captain. While serving, he continued his playing career with the All-Army Soccer team, where he served as captain for the team. Phillip currently lives in Richmond with his wife and three children.

 

Joe O’Carroll – 1971 - Joe O’Carroll is the first goalkeeper to be selected to the 25th Anniversary Team. A member of FC Richmond for many years, O’Carroll was a standout goalkeeper in the Magic program, garnering numerous selections to VYSA State Teams and Region 1 ODP teams. His outstanding play in the goal also took O’Carroll to the U16 National Team. For college, Joe headed to CAA power James Madison University. O’Carroll had a fantastic career at JMU, finishing his career with a .70 Goals Against Average. O’Carroll came back to Richmond to continue his soccer career at the professional level with the Richmond Kickers. Joe was a member of the 1995 US Open Cup and USISL Championship team.

 

Matt Borgard – 1971 - Matt was a standout player for the FC Richmond Magic program and Douglas Freeman High School. During this time, Borgard was twice named to the US National Team, once at the U18 level and once at the U20 level. After a trip to West Germany and Holland with FC Richmond, Matt was invited to stay in Germany with SV Meppen, where he played with the U18 Youth Travel Team for 3 months. During his time in Germany, Matt lived with former US Men’s National Team Member Paul Caliguiri. Matt was also selected to the Neidersaxon Fussbal Verbrand Select Team in Neidersaxon, Germany, which is similar to a Virginia State Team. Upon his return to the states, Borgard was twice named to the Parade High School All-American Team in 1988 and 1989 and then he was named to the NSCAA High School All American Team in 1989. Matt headed to Tampa, Florida and the University of South Florida to continue his soccer career at the collegiate level. While at South Florida, he was named to the All Sun Belt Conference Team three times and the Soccer America Team of the Week during his senior year. He led the Bulls in assists three years and joined Jeff Cunningham as the leading scorer for the team during his senior year. After graduating from South Florida, Borgard continued his playing career at the professional ranks for six years that included stops with the Tampa Bay Terror, Tampa Bay Cyclones, and the Richmond Kickers. Borgard still resides in Richmond with his wife and daughter. He is the Director of Cap Tech Ventures, a company that designs, manages, and integrates IT systems.

 

David Cox – 1971 - David Cox attended the University of Virginia during their dominance in the NCAA in the early 1990s. Cox was a member of the three time National Championship and three time ACC Championship Teams. He received the UVA Men’s Coaches Award for Leadership, Overall Contribution, and Academic Excellence in 1994. He also received the Alumni Achievement Award for leadership on and off the field in 1994. Off the field, Cox received Rodney T Crowley Scholarship for Academic Excellence in 1993. He received his Bachelor of History from UVA in 1994 and his MBA from the Darden School of Business in 2002. After college, Cox continued his soccer career as a member of the Richmond Kickers, the 1995 USISL and US Open Cup Champions. David currently resides in Charlotte, NC where he is a partner for a private equity investment firm, Summit Park.

 

Carrie Early Cork – 1973 - Carrie began her soccer career at the age of five, playing with an all boys team. She continued to play with boys’ teams throughout her club career, specifically with the FC Richmond Magic ’73. Carrie finally joined the ranks of a girls team when she was selected to the U14 VYSA State Team and Region 1 Team, and then again to the U16 VYSA State Team and Region 1 Team. After her stellar play with the Region 1 Team, Carrie was selected into the U16 Girls National Team. Carrie was back playing with the boys during her high school career at Chancellor High School, in Fredericksburg. Carrie helped lead to the boys to multiple regional championships and a state championship during her sophomore year. Early went onto Ferrum College, where she was a three time captain and held many of the school’s soccer records. She is the first Ferrum College soccer player to be named to the Sports Information Directors All-College Virginia State Team (Honorable Mention). Carrie was also a member of the All-Dixie Conference team during her Sophomore and Junior Years. After graduation from Ferrum, Carrie coaches for a few years, taking teams to the Gothic Cup in Sweden and the Dana Cup in Denmark. Early, now Carrie Cork, lives with her husband, and keeps up with the game of soccer by watching her 8 year old and 4 year old daughters play.

 

Trip Ellis – 1973 - Trip began his time with FC Richmond in its’ first year of existence.   During his time with the club, Trip won a U17 State Championship, was a VYSA State ODP player 5 times, Region I Player 3 times, and a NSCAA All-South Selection 3 times. Trip attended Philadelphia Textile (now Philadelphia University) on a full soccer scholarship, where he started every game during his freshman and sophomore years.  While at Philadelphia, Trip won a Philadelphia Soccer 7 Championship was named to the conference All-Star team after his Freshman year. Ellis transferred to South Florida for his final two years of college and continued his winning ways with a Conference USA Regular Season and tournament Championship, and helped guide the Bulls to a NCAA Tournament Appearance.  Trip had a six year professional career that included time with the Philadelphia Kixx (NPSL), the Richmond Kickers (USL), and Raleigh Capital Express (A League). As a coach Trip has earned both his USSF National "A" Coaching License and USSF National "Y" (youth) Coaching Licenses, and is a VYSA Coaching Education Staff Instructor. Trip still lives in Richmond with his wife and two daughters, and is the current Assistant Director of Coaching for FC Richmond.

 

Steve Kirschbaum – 1974 - Steve was an exceptional player for the FC Richmond Magic program and Mills Godwin High School. During his time with the club, Kirschbaum was named to several ODP State Teams and Region 1 Teams. After successful showings for club and ODP, he was selected to the U16 National Team in 1989. While at Godwin, Kirschbaum was named to the VHSL All-State Team in 1990 and 1991. His outstanding play also landed him on the NSCAA High School All-South Team three different years. A standout student, Kirschbaum was also selected to the VHSL Central Region All-Academic Team. That hard work in the classroom and on the field led Steve to Palo Alto, CA and Stanford University. While at Stanford, Kirschbaum was selected to multiple conference and region teams. He was a member of Stanford’s Athletic Director's Honor Roll on two separate occasions. After graduating from Stanford, Steve stayed on the West Coast and attended the University of Southern California Medical School, where we received his MD in 2002. Kirschbaum, a father to one son and two daughters, is currently a physician with Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles, CA.

 

Derrick Etienne – 1974 - Derrick Etienne was a standout player for the FC Richmond Magic program and the Midlothian High School Varsity team. While with FC Richmond Etienne, who played alongside his twin brother Darrell, was a constant member of the VYSA ODP State Team. Etienne was also named All Dominion District, All Central Region, and 2nd Team All State all while scoring 24 goals in his Team MVP season at Midlothian. Etienne stayed in Richmond for College, playing at VCU, where he was a numerous CAA Player of the Week winner. Etienne spent several years in the USL playing with the Richmond Kickers and Long Roughriders. With the Roughriders, Etienne let them to a Division2 National Championship, scoring the game winning goal and earning Finals MVP. In 2003 he was named to the USL All League Team and in 2010 Etienne was named as one of the top 15 USL Players of the Decade. Derrick was called up to the Haitian National Team, making appearances in various competitions, including the Gold Cup, Caribbean Cup, International Friendlies, and World Cup Qualifying.  He has been a youth soccer coach for over 16 years, including stops with FC Richmond, LI Roughriders and Paul Riley School of Excellence, World Class Soccer Club, and currently with NASA United. Derrick resides in New Jersey with his wife and three kids, all of which are phenomenal athletes, like their father.

 

Darrell Etienne – 1974 - Darrell Etienne, like his twin brother Derrick, was a standout player for the FC Richmond Magic program and the Midlothian High School Varsity team. While with FC Richmond Etienne, was a constant member of the VYSA ODP State Team. Darrell was also named All Dominion District, All Central Region, all while finishing the year with 20 goals for Midlothian High School. Etienne stayed in Richmond for College, playing at Virginia Commonwealth University.   Etienne spent several years in the USL playing with the Richmond Kickers and Long Roughriders. In 1999, Darrell was selected to the A-League All-Star Team. With the Roughriders, Etienne helped guide the team to a Division2 National Championship. Darrell was called up to the Haitian National Team, making appearances in various competitions, including the Gold Cup, Caribbean Cup, International Friendlies, and World Cup Qualifying. He has been a youth soccer coach for over 16 years, including stops with FC Richmond, LI Roughriders and Paul Riley School of Excellence, World Class Soccer Club, and currently with NASA United. Currently, Darrell is the Assistant Coach with the Men’s Soccer Team at Essex County College, and resides in New Jersey with his wife and son, a soccer player in the U-6 NASA United Program.

 

Derek Phillips – 1975 - Derek was one of the steadiest players to come out of the FC Richmond program. The son of a coach, Phillips was a very tactically sound player and always played the game the right way. That ability led him to a very successful pro career. It started in the MISL with a stint on the Dallas Sidekicks, one of the most famous MISL teams. After two years in the indoor game, Derek moved to the USL and the Cocoa Beach Expos. He then took his game overseas and landed in Germany. While in Germany, he played with Eintracht Oberissingheim of the German Oberliga. He came back stateside to play two years with the Maryland Mania and Chesapeake Dragons. He headed back overseas for three years, this time to Ireland and Germany playing with Derry City FC of the Irish Premier League and SV Wehen of the German Regionaliga. Phillips finished up his career playing for the Va Beach Mariners, Chesapeake Dragons, and one more season in the Irish Premier League with Shamrock Rovers. During his pro career, Derek also received call ups to the Trinidad & Tobago National Team, receiving four International “Caps” against Grenada, South Korea, Guatemala, and Puerto Rico. Phillips now makes his home in Maryland as the owner of Inside Out Performance, a strength and conditioning company focusing on the training of elite athletes.

 

Deryk Shockley – 1976 - Deryk was a standout soccer player in the Richmond area, both with FC Richmond and Manchester High School. During his time with FC Richmond, Shockley was a member of several successful teams, including the Magic team that won the 1990 Virginia State Cup. Deryk was awarded for his play with a call-up to the U17 US National Team. He was a constant member and starter for the team for 3 years. During his time with the National Team, Shockley competed in the U17 World Cup and won tournaments in France, Jamaica, and Cuba. In 1993, Shockley was again rewarded for his outstanding play, garnering selection to the NSCAA/Umbro All-American Team. During his senior year at Manchester, was selected to the All-District, All-Region, and VHSL All-State team. He then headed to Spartanburg Methodist College, where he helped guide the team to a National JUCO Championship. After college, Shockley began a successful six year pro soccer career. During his pro career, Shockley was a member of the Baltimore Bays where he won a USISL National Indoor Championship. He then moved back to outdoor game and had stops with the Richmond Kickers, Roanoke Wrath, and Wilmington Hammerheads. Shockley currently resides in South Carolina and works as a Customer Service Representative with Shockley Enterprises, LLC.

 

Jeff Laughlin – 1976 - Jeff had several great years with the FC Richmond Magic program, which included trips to Europe, and Mills Godwin High School. After finishing up his high school and club career, Laughlin left Virginia to attend Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Laughlin, playing at Lee on a full soccer scholarship, was a four year starter for the team and a two time captain. During his time at Lee, Jeff was named a NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Scholar All-American and a NCCAA (National Christian College Association of America) All-American Scholar Athlete. After college, Jeff spent time volunteering with America Scores, where he worked with inner-city youths in Washington DC as a soccer coach and mentor. Jeff now is a practicing Pediatric Dentist in Richmond.

 

Matt Magner – 1977 - Matt was a standout with the FC Richmond Magic program and the Godwin High School varsity team. Magner was a member of several VYSA State Teams and went to Region I camp three different years. He was a member of Magic teams that played in competitions in Europe, Bermuda, and the Dallas Cup. After a successful high school and club career, Magner went on to attend Campbell University on a soccer scholarship. During his time with the Camels, Matt was named to the TAAC (Trans Atlantic Athletic Conference) All Conference team in 2000. During that year, he was also the team’s captain and was named team MVP. Soccer wasn’t Matt’s only sport, he was also a member of the Campbell University Tennis team for two years, making him a rare Division I two-sport athlete. Magner, who has a two year old daughter, continues to be involved in tennis as he and his father run a tennis court surfacing and construction company.   Magner, still an active tennis player, is currently ranked 10th in the state for doubles. Though tennis has taken over his career, he admits that soccer remains a huge part of his life and always will.

 

Johnnie Le Lay – 1977 - Johnnie was a long time member of the FC Richmond Program. Le Lay, a very technically sound player, was selected to several VYSA State teams during his time with FC Richmond. He was a part of the ’77 Magic team that competed in the Dallas Cup, as well as, competitions in Bermuda and Europe.  Johnnie was named the MVP of the Bermuda Cup after his stellar play in the tournament. Le Lay stayed “home” to play his college soccer at Randolph-Macon College. Le Lay had a successful playing career with the Yellow Jackets, garnering All Conference, All-State, and All-South Atlantic Region honors. Le Lay was also a four year starter for the team and a 2 time captain. After majoring in Biology and minor in Chemistry at R-MC, Johnnie headed to Vanderbilt University for his postgraduate education. After completing his PhD in the Dept of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, he headed to the University of Pennsylvania for his Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Johnnie now resides in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife Nicole.

 

Henderson Hicks – 1978 - Henderson, better known as “H”, was one of the standouts for the FC Richmond program during the early 1990s. “H” played his high school soccer at Thomas Jefferson, and led the team to some of their most successful years as a program. He was named to the All Colonial District Team three different times (2nd team twice and honorable mention once). After graduating from TJ, Hicks headed down to Greensboro College. While at Greensboro, Henderson played for one the most successful teams in Greensboro College history, which included several conference championships and multiple NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Playing in the midfield, alongside current Blackburn Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen, Hicks helped guide the school to the 1998 NCAA Division III Championship Game. Because of his stellar play in the Final Four, Hicks was named to All Media Team for the NCAA Division III Final Four. Hicks was a two time selection to the Dixie Conference (DIAC) Second Team. His senior year, he was named to the All-South Region First Team and then to the NSCAA Division III All-American Team (3rd Team Selection). Henderson is back in Richmond now, looking to give back to the game he loves by coaching youth soccer.

 

Katie Tracy – 1979 - Katie was one of the finest female soccer players to come out of the Richmond area.   During an outstanding high school career, Katie was twice named to the NSCAA Youth All-American, was also named to the Parade All-American Team, and was a member of the U16 and U19 US National Teams. Tracy took her soccer, and basketball skills, to Charlottesville and the University of Virginia. While at UVA, Tracy, also a member of the women’s basketball team, was a four year starter (started every game she played) for the women’s soccer program. She was named MVP of the team twice, was a two time captain, a three time NSCAA All-Region selection, and a member of the ACC Second Team in 2000. Katie also received the team’s Unsung Hero Award and was a three time member of the ACC All-Academic Team. After her successful career with UVA, Katie was selected as the 5th Overall Pick in the WUSA Draft by the New York Power. After time in the WUSA, Katie moved onto working in outdoor education in Vermont, Colorado, and Florida.  She then began her teaching career, where she continues today in Charlottesville as a 4th Grade Teacher.

 

Courtney Owen Mattes – 1979 - Courtney, an outstanding goalkeeper, was a member of the FC Richmond Mystx and Magic programs.  During her time with club, Owen was selected to the U16 US National Team Pool. After a standout club and high school career, Owen headed to Williamsburg, VA and the College of William and Mary. While at William and Mary, Courtney was leader for the Tribe Women’s soccer team and had a stellar career in goal. Owen was a CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) Scholar Athlete, a two time Co-Captain for the team, and led the CAA in Goals Against Average during her Junior and Senior years. After her senior year, she was voted the Team MVP by her teammates. After her William and Mary career ended, Courtney was invited into the WUSA’s Washington Freedom training camp, but was unable to attend due to a severe torn quadriceps. She then went on to MCV and graduated with a Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree. Owen, now Courtney Mattes, currently works in Richmond as an Orthopedic Physical Therapist and lives with her husband and two sons.

 

Kelly Renkin – 1987 - Kelly was a standout player for the FC Richmond Mystx program. Under the guidance of Trip Dunville, Shane Amsler, and Dave Amler, Renkin was a member of one of the strongest Mystx teams to come through the program. Along with her success with the Mystx, Kelly had a great career at Clover Hill HS, earning a spot on the All-Region Team three times, All-State Team three times and being named Dominion District Player of the Year in 2004. After graduating, Renkin left Richmond and headed down to UNC-Wilmington to continue her soccer career. While at UNC-W, Renkin became the first player in program history to be named All-CAA for three consecutive years. In her Freshman year, Kelly was selected to the All-CAA Rookie Team. She was named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region Team on two separate occasions and to the NCCSIA All-State Team three different years. When she finished her time at UNC-W, she left the program as the All-Time Leader in Game Winning Goals, third all-time in Total Points and Goals, and fourth all time in Assists. With all these impressive statistics at UNC-W, Renkin has gone down as one of the top players in Colonial Athletic Association history. She was named to the CAA’s 25th Anniversary Women’s Soccer Team in 2009. Renkin currently resides in New York City working at Memorial Sloan-Kettering, one of the world’s top cancer research facilities.

 

Kristin Stannard – 1987 - Stannard is one of the top women’s soccer players to come out of the Richmond area. Kristin played in the FC Richmond Mystx program and for Clover Hill High School. During her time in Richmond, Kristin was named to the U14 National Team, the U17 National Team, and the U20 National Team competing with both teams in competitions in Brazil and Mexico. She was a multiple selection to the Region I team and VYSA State Teams. In 2005, she was named the NSCAA National High School Scholar Athlete of the Year, as well as, the 2006 Virginia Gatorade High School Player of the Year. She was also named to the NSCAA Youth All-American Team as a senior. She was a multiple selection to the All-State, All-Region, All-District, and All-Metro teams. During her time at Clover Hill, Stannard was selected as the All-Metro Player of the Year, Dominion District Player of the Year, and Central Region Player of the Year. She left Richmond for Stanford University on a soccer scholarship, as a Soccer Buzz top 15 recruit. She helped guide the Cardinal to two NCAA Final Four appearances, losing in the semifinals her junior year and the finals during her senior year. She was a member of the All PAC-10 Freshmen Team, an All PAC-10 2nd Team Selection, and a member of the All PAC-10 All-Academic Team. She was honored with a selection to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week in 2006 and Top Drawer National Team of the week in 2008 and 2009. After graduating Stanford with a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stannard took a job as a Project Cost Engineer with Bloom Energy in Sunnyvale, California.

 

Dylan Bowman – 1992 - Dylan, a former player at Princeton University, was a standout for the FC Richmond Magic program and James River High School.  At James River, where Bowman finished as Salutatorian and a National AP Scholar, he was a First Team All-State, First Team All-Region, and First Team All-District Performer. He was also named to the Richmond Times-Dispatch All Metro team as well as a finalist for the Times-Dispatch/Richmond Sports Backers Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. With FC Richmond, Bowman was a member of several successful Magic teams and was given the FC Richmond College Scholarship for this work on and off the field. His level of play was rewarded with a call up to the U18 National Pool in 2009. Bowman, a consistent member of the VYSA State Team and Region 1 Team, traveled with the National Team to compete against other Academy Youth Teams in Chicago and Atlanta. In his freshman year, Dylan helped the Princeton Tigers to a berth in the 2010 NCAA Division Tournament and an Ivy League Championship.

 

Luis Rendon – 1993 - Luis, is the youngest member of the 25th Anniversary team and attended Cosby High School. Luis began his playing career with the U9 FC Richmond program.  In the winter of 2009, Rendon was named to the Winter Interregional All-Star Team after scoring 4 goals for the Region I ODP team in the Disney Showcase.  A constant member of the VYSA State Team, Region I ODP Team, High School District Team, and Central Region Team, Rendon has a bright future and well deserving of the being the youngest member of the 25th Anniversary Team. Luis was a constant figure in the U18 National Team, competing against other National Teams in Israel, Portugal, and in the Milk Cup Tournament in Northern Ireland.  In February of 2011, Rendon went to Phoenix with the U18 National Team to play against other MLS squads during their preseason camps.
